The Complete Guide to Visiting Universal Studios Beijing: Insider Tips, Tricks, and Essential Info

By Mark

If you’re considering a trip to Universal Studios Beijing, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. Opened in 2021, this theme park is packed with incredible rides, unique attractions, and familiar favourites, from the immersive Jurassic World Adventure to the ever-popular Wizarding World of Harry Potter. However, because it’s still a relatively new park, much of the information available for Western visitors is limited. This guide covers everything you need to make your trip seamless and stress-free, from airport navigation and ticket purchasing to hotel options and payment systems in China.

Guide to Visiting Universal Studios Beijing

Arriving in Beijing and Getting to Universal Studios

Once you arrive at Beijing Daxing International Airport, you’ll have a couple of options for reaching Universal Studios Beijing. Taxis are generally the most convenient choice, offering a direct route that takes about 50 minutes. Taxi fares are surprisingly affordable by Western standards, we paid 193 RMB, plus an additional 37 RMB for tolls. It’s a good idea to have your hotel name and address saved in Chinese on your phone, as most drivers do not speak English. You can usually find the Chinese translation on your booking confirmation, especially if you booked through platforms like Trip.com or Booking.com.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly alternative, you can take the Beijing Metro. While affordable, this journey requires about two hours and two transfers, so it’s less ideal and I don’t recommend it if you’re traveling with a lot of luggage or coming off a long-haul flight. To make navigating the metro easier, download the Beijing Metro app, which shows station names in both English and Chinese, and plan to purchase tickets at the manned counter, as the automatic machines only accept Chinese ID cards.

Staying at the Universal Studios Grand Hotel: The Closest Accommodation Option

If you want to maximize your park experience, consider staying at the Universal Studios Grand Hotel, like we did. This hotel, situated right at the park’s entrance, offers unparalleled convenience and a touch of luxury, making it an ideal choice for visitors who want quick, easy access to the park.

You can select between two room view options: a city view that overlooks Universal CityWalk or a theme park view that offers stunning views down Hollywood Boulevard. We booked a theme park view room, this elevated our experience, especially we were there to fully immerse ourselves in the Universal magic. A significant perk of staying at the Universal Studios Grand Hotel is early entry to the park, allowing hotel guests to access attractions like Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Kung Fu Panda Journey of the Dragon Warrior before regular opening hours.

Currently, booking the Universal Studios Grand Hotel can be done through the Universal Beijing App or Trip.com. The app requires WeChat Pay for payment, while Trip.com allows for credit card payments, making it a bit easier for international travellers.

If the Universal Studios Grand Hotel is out of your budget or you prefer staying in downtown Beijing, there are plenty of other accommodation options. Beijing’s central districts, such as Dongcheng or Wangfujing, offer a variety of hotels and easy access to some of Beijing’s best sights, like the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven. However, keep in mind that staying downtown will add travel time to Universal Studios.

Booking Tickets and Navigating Ticket Options

Universal Studios Beijing offers several ticket options to suit your schedule, with the flexibility to purchase through multiple platforms. The most straightforward ticket is the single-day pass, which starts at 558 RMB for adults and 410 RMB for children. If you’re arriving in Beijing in the morning and only have the afternoon to visit, consider the 1.5-day ticket, which allows for a half-day visit on your first day and a full day on your second. For a more relaxed experience, a 2-day flex ticket gives you plenty of time to explore the park at your own pace.

You can purchase tickets directly through the Universal Beijing App, though note that this method requires payment via WeChat. Alternatively, platforms like Trip.com and Klook support credit card payments and allow you to choose from different ticket types. For visitors looking to maximize their time at the park, the Universal Express Pass is a worthwhile upgrade. Available in several tiers, it offers skip-the-line access to 3, 5, or 14 rides, depending on the version you choose. Prices start at 1,200 RMB, and it’s available for purchase two weeks before your visit.

Cashless Payments: Using Alipay and WeChat Pay in China

As a largely cashless society, China relies heavily on mobile payment systems, with Alipay and WeChat Pay being the two main options. Setting up one of these apps before your trip is highly recommended, as you’ll find that even small vendors often only accept mobile payments. Alipay is often regarded as the more user-friendly choice for Western travellers, but WeChat Pay is also easy to set up. Both apps require you to register with your passport and link a debit or credit card.

Once set up, using mobile payments is straightforward: retailers will either scan a unique QR code generated by your app, or you may be required to scan the vendor’s QR code and input the payment amount. Both options are widely accepted in and outside the park, although Universal Studios still accommodates cash payments if needed.

Staying Connected: E-SIM and VPN Options

Having reliable internet access is crucial for navigating Beijing, using mobile payments, and accessing the Universal Beijing App. For convenience, consider purchasing an e-SIM from providers like Airalo, which allows you to keep your usual phone number while accessing local data. Airalo offers various data packages that can be activated quickly upon arrival. I used Airalo for the entirety of our 23 days in China (plus an eight day trip to Hong Kong the previous year) and it worked flawlessly the whole time. Since the Great Firewall restricts access to Western websites and apps (such as Google, Instagram, and Facebook), downloading a VPN before your trip is essential. Not all VPNs work in China, so choose one with a strong track record in the country. A number of the more well known VPN’s don’t work consistently in China, which is why I chose Astrill VPN. A VPN will allow you to access restricted apps and websites throughout your trip, particularly helpful if you need to use Google Maps or stay in touch via WhatsApp. Check out Astral VPN HERE.

If you are using an e-SIM full time you will not need a VPN as they already act like a VPN and give you access to all the western websites and Apps, I only used a VPN when I was connected to hotel WIFI when I wanted to save my data allowance.

Making the Most of the Universal Beijing App

The Universal Beijing App is an invaluable tool for navigating the park, as it provides up-to-date information on wait times, an interactive map, and show schedules. Download the app before arriving in China to familiarize yourself with its layout and functionality. In addition to helping you navigate, the app allows you to buy tickets and Universal Express Passes, though be prepared to register with your phone number or email.

With the app, you can check real-time ride wait times, helping you prioritize the most popular attractions. Showtimes for performances, like the action-packed Waterworld Stunt Show, are also listed, making it easy to plan your day and fit in as many activities as possible.

Unique Attractions to Enjoy at Universal Studios Beijing

Universal Studios Beijing combines some of Universal’s iconic attractions with exclusive experiences. Jurassic World Adventure, a new addition exclusive to the Beijing park, offers a thrilling, immersive experience with lifelike animatronics and detailed sets. Fans of Harry Potter will love Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, a ride that transports you into Hogwarts and its enchanting surroundings.

Minions Land is a hit for families and fans of the Despicable Me films, offering a vibrant atmosphere with themed rides and character encounters. Transformers: Battle for the AllSpark, another thrilling 3D ride, is a must-visit for fans of the franchise. If you’re into live-action shows, don’t miss the Waterworld Stunt Show, where impressive stunts and special effects recreate the excitement of the classic movie.

Exploring Beijing’s Must-See Sites Beyond Universal Studios

While Universal Studios Beijing is undoubtedly a highlight, Beijing itself is full of fascinating landmarks and cultural sites that are well worth exploring. If time allows, make sure to visit the following attractions:

  • The Forbidden City: A sprawling palace complex filled with history, culture, and intricate architecture. It’s one of Beijing’s must-see destinations and offers an impressive glimpse into China’s imperial past.
  • Temple of Heaven: A spiritual site and architectural wonder, surrounded by beautiful gardens. It’s a peaceful retreat from the city’s bustle.
  • The Great Wall of China at Mutianyu: This section of the Great Wall offers stunning views and, for a bit of added fun, a toboggan descent option. However, the toboggan is weather-dependent, so check ahead if this interests you.

If you’re a theme park fan, you can even extend your adventure to Shanghai Disneyland or Hong Kong Disneyland, two parks that offer unique experiences tailored to their regions. Shanghai Disneyland is home to Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure, a standout attraction, while Hong Kong Disneyland combines familiar Disney magic with a distinct blend of East and West.

Final Tips and Closing Thoughts

Visiting Universal Studios Beijing is an exciting experience, but thorough preparation can make it even better. Ensure you have your transportation planned, tickets secured, and mobile payment apps ready. While it might seem daunting to navigate a cashless system and new transportation options, you’ll quickly find that Beijing is a highly accessible and rewarding destination.

In addition to experiencing the park, take the opportunity to immerse yourself in Beijing’s rich culture and historical sites. With an open mind and a bit of preparation, Universal Studios Beijing and the city itself will leave you with incredible memories. Enjoy the adventure and get ready for a theme park experience like no other!

By using the Universal Beijing App before your trip you can look at live wait times to plan your strategy when you arrive. This way you will know which rides get busy and at what time of day.
