The Sci-fi Dine-in Theater Restaurant in Disney’s Hollywood Studios is one of those places I have always meant to go but never gotten around to it.
If you are not familiar with this place it is set up like a 1950’d drive in theatre were the cars double ad dining tables. It serves American cuisine whilst you watch classic B movie sci-fi movie clips on the big screen.
Disney describe the restaurant as “It’s always showtime at the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant, where you’ll find scrumptious items on the menu and scary clips on the screen: attacking aliens, marauding mummies, rampaging robots and more. (Remember, don’t scream with your mouth full!)”
We had an evening Advance Dining Reservation and turned up about twenty minutes early. Whilst you wait you can help yourself to some complimentary popcorn and water. When it was our time to be seated we followed our car hop into the Hollywood-style soundstage where our automo-booth waited. Each car can seat six people in three rows, as we were only a party of four a couple joined us and sat in the back.
It is very dark in here and was quite difficult to read the menu, I used a mixture of the very dim lamp in the car and my mobile phone. We had heard good things about the burgers here but fancied something different so ordered the Sci-Fi Barbecue Platter; this consisted of Smoked Pulled Pork, St. Louis-style Ribs, Grilled Chicken, and Sausage served with Jalapeño-Cheddar Cornbread, Southern Coleslaw, and Cowboy Beans finished with Coca-Cola Barbecue Sauce as well as chicken tenders and a cheeseburger for the kids.
To be honest we were very disappointed in the barbecue platter. Although the plate was large in reality the portion was very small and did not taste good at all.
For desert we had the Warm Glazed Doughnut – with Cinnamon Apples and topped with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream and Caramel Sauce and the House-made Sci-Fi Candy Bar – Cookies and Cream Mousse, Chocolate Ganache, Chocolate Sauce. These were both very nice.
I would not recommend this restaurant for the food but I did like the atmosphere and watching the old sci-fi B movies.
